The city of Ede , the country home of Sen. Ademola Adeleke , the younger brother of Late Gov. Isiaka Adeleke ,and who is also popularly known as the dancing senator was agog with jubilation as the news of his victory and his party PDP as the governor-elect filtered into the media space as officiallyannounced by the INEC Chief Returning Officer, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
In an election that was keenly contested among about fifteen political heavyweights as candidates in different political parties especially Gov. Adegboyega Oyetola ,the standard bearer of All Progressives Party(APC), Sen. Adeleke of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) who polled four hundred and three thousand, three hundred and seventy-one(403,371) votes and led in seventeen (17) local government against his closer rival , Oyetola and APC that garnered three hundred and seventy-five thousand , and twenty-seven votes but won in thirteen (13) out of the thirty (30) LGAs in the State of Osun.
Adeleke defeated Oyetola (APC) who had 23 votes and Dr Akin Ogubiyi who had 1 vote with his 218 votes.
Other 13 Candidates and their votes are as follows:
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), there were 5,305 Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) and 332 Registration Areas (RAs) available for the election.
This was disclosed last week by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Abdulganiyu Raji in preparations for the election.
The commission also put the number of registration areas in Osun at 332, with 1,955,657 registered voters and while only 335,298 collected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
The election takes place in 246 polling units across the 30 local government areas in the state.
The election has remained a watershed in the history of the state that has produced ten ( 10) governors since 1991. The poll is described as a political returned match between Adeleke and Oyetola and Osun West and the state . The victory of the umbrella party to all lovers of democracy is a clear testimony of acceptance of Adeleke and PDP and the rejection of Oyetola and APC and their political intrigues.
You will all remembered that four years ago (2018), Sen. Adeleke and the PDP were robbed in a day light having cruised home to victory in most of the local government areas ,but suddenly the election results were described inconclusive by the electoral umpire over four hundred votes difference , and later the re-run was manipulated by the power that be for Oyetola and his party ,the ruling APC.
The people of the State of Osun were apparently determined to put an end to the repressive regime of President Muhammadu Buhari locked in the vicious circle of economic woes and insecurity, and the lacklustre administration of Gov. Oyetola with poor performance and neglect of the citizens , and the empty electoral promises of the APC in the state.
However, some schools of thoughts believed that the Osun state citizens were merely reacting to the imposition of Oyetola on them by Alh. Bola Ahmed Tinubu , the current presidential candidate of APC and the APC cabal four years ago. Of importance too is the decision of the Minister of Interior and former governor of the state, Alh. Rauf Aregbesola and his camp to distant themselves from Oyetola and the cabal that forced him on the party, and the recent shortchange meted to them during the party congresses in the state.
As critically observed during the gubernatorial poll in Ekiti State in an election that pitched the former governors(Ayodele Fayase ,Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi) against themselves, vote buying, though alleged and noticed, was played down yesterday due to the decision of Security Operatives to deal ruthlessly with any individual who might be found culpable..
As described by all political spectators ,the election is said to be adopted as a benchmark for future elections in the country especially the forthcoming general elections. The upload of poll results from the polling units was applauded by all as it helped,as witnessed yesterday, to resolve the propensity of political gladiators to rig elections through manipulation of results using the electoral umpire. It has indeed brought integrity to the institution of ballot box!
It's widely believed also that the PDP won the election by fielding a popular candidate who is loved by all beyond the party lines. They advised all political parties especially the party hierarchies and the political juggernauts among them to always allow internal democracy to have its way at all times. The decision of the PDP in Osun State to close rank and work against their common enemy was largely believed to have been responsible for the victory of the umbrella party compared to the worrisome situation then in Ekiti State gubernatorial poll where the party lost to the ruling APC on the ground of internal division .
The victory of Adeleke and the PDP surely as observed by many political analysts who spoke to AbejoyeMedia News under conditions anonymity revealed that the PDP is now stronger in the south west as it now controls both Oyo and Osun. This is largely believed by politicians will affect the electoral fortune of the APC and BAT in the South-West geo-political zone in the forthcoming general election.
